Yoga Nidra is a form of guided meditation also known as “yogic sleep” or “effortless relaxation”. It’s usually practiced lying down with a teacher guiding the session. The practice draws our attention inwards, and we learn to surf between the states of wakefulness and sleep, where our body finds its natural state of equilibrium. It is an ancient technique where the practitioner enters the deep states of conscious relaxation. This very powerful meditation technique, is one of the easiest yoga practices to develop and maintain. While the practitioner rests comfortably in savasana, the meditation takes you through the five layers of self, leaving you with a sense of wholeness. It has been said that an hour of yoga Nidra can be as relaxing and restorative as four hours of regular sleep (although I could not find the research to back this up).
